If you’re a TV nerd heading to the San Diego Comic-Con, it doesn’t get much better than this: Firefly will have a 10-year anniversary panel at this year’s SDCC!
Granted, it’s more than a little unclear as to what this actually means. The news leaked out early on Saturday, June 23 and managed to make its way clear across the Internet in the blink of an eye. That’s what Firefly news tends to do, after all.
The San Diego Comic-Con Unofficial Blog broke the news that a Firefly panel of some sort would be at the Con in recognition of the show’s 10th anniversary. Confirmation of this Firefly news came from an excellent source: Tim Minear, the former executive producer of the series, posted on his Facebook page about the possible event.
In response to a question about whether or not he would even attend the San Diego Comic-Con, Tim Minear replied: “Dunno yet. There is a ten year Firefly thing and I might if only for that. All depends!”
Alas, this reply didn’t exactly assure Minear’s participation in such a panel, nor did it indicate anything about Firefly cast members who might be in attendance. In response to the Internet maelstrom any mention of Firefly must necessarily produce, Tim Minear clarified things a few hours later: “I see that my response here has elicited a bit of a firestorm on the net — just to clarify, I’m not actually even sure what this thing is yet or who is gonna be there. More to follow.”
Whatever the case, the panel does hold the promise of some Comic-Con favorites returning to San Diego. Nathan Fillion, for example, has attended the Con to promote Castle in recent years. But there’s no Castle panel for 2012. Maybe the Firefly panel will replace it?
Firefly had an all-too-brief run on FOX during the 2002-2003 TV season. The humorous/dramatic space western (seriously — there were cows on the spaceship at times) created by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) failed to gain an audience in the initial, problematic run. Fan support and DVD sales after cancellation, however, brought about a feature film, Serenity, and created a fandom that remains strong a decade later.
In addition to Nathan Fillion, Firefly starred Gina Torres (Suits), Adam Baldwin (Chuck), Morena Baccarin (Homeland, V), Alan Tudyk (Suburgatory), Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Jewel Staite (The L.A. Complex), Sean Maher (The Playboy Club) and Ron Glass (Barney Miller).
