At the 2013 Emmy Awards, The Voice managed to do something that American Idol has never been able to — and former showrunner Nigel Lythgoe is sharing his reaction on Twitter. Also in today’s Roundup, Jennifer Hudson has released a new song featuring T.I., and Colton Dixon is showcasing his own take on a classic holiday tune.

Nigel Lythgoe’s Reaction to The Voice‘s Emmy Win
Former executive producer Nigel Lythgoe might not be in charge of running American Idol anymore, but he still likes to put in his two cents every once in a while (like when his own judging Dream Team was hired after he left).
Following The Voice‘s big win at the Emmys, taking home the prize for Best Competition Reality Show — The Amazing Race has won every single year except one, when Top Chef broke their streak — Lythgoe is “shocked” that the NBC singing show managed to snag an Emmy when American Idol over the years has never won in this category. He let his thoughts be known on Twitter:
“Shocked that The Voice won. Not so much for #SYTYCD but for #AmericanIdol. The first, the best and the program that changed the face of TV. … I’m talking about over the 11 years American Idol changed the face of television across the World it didn’t win an Emmy. Not just lately. … Over the years so many shows deserved Emmys. #Survivor, the best format of all. #American Idol, changed the face of television viewing, DWTS.
He later clarified that he’s not angry over the outcome, just shocked: “Isn’t it amazing how the press have turned my ‘shock’ into ‘anger’ that ‘THE VOICE’ won an Emmy. I certainly wasn’t angry, I was surprised.”
The argument can certainly be made that The Voice is better produced and more glossy than Idol, but I definitely see where he’s coming from. The Voice wouldn’t even have the success it does today without American Idol having paved the way over the past several years and having “changed the face of TV,” as Lythgoe put it, because it’s true.
The Voice is still fairly new and so it’s the flavor that’s in right now, and may still be in for years to come. I want to point out that I’m not saying they didn’t deserve to win. But those who accepted the Emmy this past weekend for The Voice really have Idol to thank for the place they’re in today.

Jennifer Hudson’s New Song “I Can’t Describe (The Way I Feel)”
It’s been a while since we’ve heard new music from Jennifer Hudson, outside of the song featured in her new Winnie Mandela film. But she has now released a new song called “I Can’t Describe (The Way I Feel)” — she collaborated with Pharrell on the tune, which also features rapper T.I.
Pharrell, a songwriter and music producer, tweeted, “I love when artists jump out the window for feel good music.” And the Oscar winner posted a message as well when she released the song: “I just want to make u feel good! That’s all! Let me take u back!”

Listen to Colton Dixon’s Rendition of “Jingle Bells”
It’s the end of September, which means it’s time to start thinking about Christmas, apparently, despite the fact that we still have Halloween and Thanksgiving to look forward to. But regardless, season 11 finalist and Christian rock singer Colton Dixon is getting into the holiday spirit by releasing his own version of “Jingle Bells”
In a new lyric video, he gives the classic Christmas tune a pop/rock makeover. But not just that — pay attention to the last minute of the song because he changes it up and takes us back to our childhood when we all used to sing “Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg.” It’s quite fun.
