Battlestar Galactica producers called a press conference today to break some surprising, but long rumored, news regarding SciFi’s Peabody award winning show: The series will be completing its story in season four. At the Saturn Awards, Edward James Olmos and Katee Sackhoff both foreshadowed this news by stating that they believed this would be the final season for Battlestar Galactica. Now, Producers David Eick and Ronald D. Moore have met with the press to discuss their reasons for deciding to end the show.
We had the opportunity to sit in on the press conference and learn a few things about what motivated the creators to end the story at this point.
- The prequel movie will connect with the events of Season Four.
- The end will be the end. There is no intention of doing follow up movies.
- One reporter asked the producers how they felt about LOST stealing Battlestar Galactica’s flash forward device. If you smell burning flesh, its me.
- A lot of people wanted to know if we would see earth before the series took a bow. The producers were as vague as possible, but seemed to indicate that we would be seeing more of Earth.
- The scheduling has not been determined yet with regards to what the airtime will be, or even if they may follow LOST’s lead and go for a repeat free run.
- The decision to bring the series to an end came last season when they discovered the temple. They felt that was an indication that they were entering the third act.
- ‘Caprica,’ the Battlestar Galactica prequel is still in development.
- The final five were chosen strategically.
- The end of the story will have strong cosmological implications regarding the story, so expect the shows strong subtext to continue to the end.
