CBS has announced summer 2014 premiere dates for not only its returning dramas and reality show, but for two brand-new shows as well. All shows will be premiering at the end of June and beginning of July.
Big Brother kicks everything off on Wednesday, June 25 at 8pm with the start of its multi-night schedule for season 16. The Julie Chen-hosted reality show continues on Thursday, June 26 at 9pm. The following week, starting on Sunday, June 29 at 8pm, will see the start of Big Brother airing three nights a week. The first eviction episode airs July 3.
The sophomore season of the sci-fi drama Under the Dome, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, begins Monday June 30 at 10pm. CBS has revealed that King himself has written the premiere episode.
The third returning CBS show is Unforgettable, starring Poppy Montgomery as a police detective with a condition that gives her the ability to remember every moment of her life in detail. Season 3 premieres on Sunday, June 29 at 10pm.
Aside from those three, CBS will also launch two new dramas this summer. The first is Reckless on June 29 at 9pm, in between Big Brother and Unforgettable. According to CBS, Reckless takes place in Charleston, SC, “where a gorgeous Yankee litigator and a charming southern attorney must hide their intense mutual attraction as a police sex scandal threatens to tear the city apart.” The show stars Anna Wood, Cam Gigandet, Shawn Hatosy, Adam Rodriguez, Georgina Haig, Kim Wayans, Gregory Harrison and Michael Gladis. Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke is an executive producer.
Event series are becoming more common on network TV these days. So CBS is at it again, this time with Extant, which makes its debut on Wednesday, July 9 at 9pm, following Big Brother. (It was originally scheduled to bow on July 2.)
The sci-fi series stars Halle Berry as an astronaut who returns from a year in outer space and attempts to reconnect with her family. But the reunion is marked by a huge secret she’s holding on to. Extant also stars Goran Visnjic, Camryn Manheim, Michael O’Neill, Hiroyuki Sanada, Pierce Gagnon and Grace Gummer. Steven Spielberg and Berry are two of the executive producers.
CBS President Nina Tassler said at the CBS TCA Winter Tour that Extant is “just the perfect melding of classic Spielberg genres. It’s science fiction, and it’s family.”
Under the Dome was originally supposed to be a limited series event, but after strong viewership, it was renewed by the network. So it wouldn’t be out of the question for Extant to continue beyond season 1 if it also becomes a hit.
