Boston Legal may have been renewed for another season but that doesn’t mean that ABC will run the legal dramedy for a long time. The network has just decided that the show’s fifth season will also be its last.
According to ABC president Steve McPherson, Boston Legal will bow out with a 13-episode run in the fall, which will push the show just past the 100-episode mark.
Though many were shocked by the announcement, McPherson went on to explain the ABC remake of the BBC hit Life on Mars caused Boston Legal to close its curtain. Given that David E. Kelley wrote most of the pilot, he now trades the series to October Road‘s Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Scott Rosenberg in return for writing virtually every one of the final thirteen episodes of Boston Legal.
“Because we were able to make a deal to bring Boston Legal back, David is going to move over and I think write pretty much every [episode] of the final season of Boston,” McPherson explained.
Fans may be disappointed with the network’s decision to end Boston Legal, but at least, Crane, Poole and Schmidt can go out in style.
For its fifth and final season, Boston Legal is moving to Mondays at 10pm ET/PT. Fans can look forward for some major overhauls as some casting changes may be in store. One series regular, Saffron Burrows, has already left the show for NBC’s new series, My Own Worst Enemy.
Boston Legal, which follows the professional and personal lives of attorneys at the law firm of Crane, Poole & Schmidt, presently stars James Spader, John Larroquette, Christian Clemenson, Gary Anthony Williams, Tara Summers, Taraji P. Henson, Candice Bergen and William Shatner.
Meanwhile, fans can catch the fourth season finale of Boston Legal on Wednesday, May 21 at 10pm.
