Nominees for the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards were announced Sunday, and for the second straight year, ABC lorded over fellow broadcast networks NBC and FOX, garnering nine nominations overall. The nods were distributed among such ABC scripted shows as Boston Legal, Ugly Betty, Brothers & Sisters, Dirty Sexy Money, Desperate Housewives and All My Children.
The network also received nods for the 20/20 story “My Secret Self: A Story of Transgender Children, “and for the Good Morning America news segment “Sent Away to ‘Change.'”
ABC’s sister cable network, ABC Family, also received GLAAD Award nominations for its shows, with the sci-fi hit Kyle XY earning a nod for Best Individual Episode (in a series without a regular LGBT character) for the installment “Free to Be You and Me,” and the new college drama Greek earning a nod for Best Drama Series.
Boston Legal, which stars Emmy winners James Spader and William Shatner, is nominated under the same category as Kyle XY, for the episode “Do Tell.” Brothers & Sisters and Dirty Sexy Money are both nominated for Best Drama Series, while Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives are both nominated for Best Comedy Series. All My Children is up for a Best Daily Drama GLAAD Award.
Nominated shows from other broadcast networks include the comedy My Name is Earl (NBC) and the reality series Trading Spaces (FOX).
“This year’s extraordinary nominees exemplify the important strides we have made as a community toward creating a truly inclusive society,” GLAAD President Neil Giuliano said in a statement. “GLAAD’s persistent, effective efforts to educate media professionals continue to yield a growing body of stories about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people that are more compelling, more honest, and more real than ever before. We are proud to recognize all of this year’s GLAAD Media Awards nominees.”
The 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards are split into four ceremonies, to be held in at the Marriot Marquis in New York on March 17, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in South Florida on April 12, the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on April 26, and the San Francisco Marriot in San Francisco on May 10. Air dates of the ceremonies will be announced in the near future.
