Ever since its finale back in August, fans have been waiting for an announcement on whether or not freshman series Chasing Life would be returning beyond season 1, but now we know.
ABC Family has announced that Chasing Life is being renewed for a second season, consisting of 13 episodes.
“Through the laughter and the tears, our audience has connected with the characters and relationships in Chasing Life and we are thrilled to continue telling April’s courageous story,” Karey Burke, Executive Vice President of Programming and Development, said in a statement. “Chasing Life has found a home here.”
Chasing Life centers on a 20-something woman named April, a journalist who is diagnosed with cancer. She relies on a support system that includes her mom Sarah, sister Brenna and her grandmother, along with her uncle who works at the hospital as an oncologist. The summer finale saw April undergo chemotherapy, and ended with a cliffhanger when April saw Leo’s parents at the hospital room, leaving viewers wondering if Leo made it or not.
ABC Family notes that the drama is the number one cable TV series in its time period in four demographics: adults 18-34, women 18-34, viewers 12-34 and females 12-34. The show averaged 1.17 million viewers across its first 10 episodes.
Before the series returns, though, ABC Family will air a Christmas-themed episode next month as part of its “25 Days of Christmas” holiday event, which will air on Tuesday, December 9 at 9pm, following a Pretty Little Liars holiday episode.
Other shows on the network will also be receiving the same festive treatment, with The Fosters and Switched at Birth airing special episodes the night before, on Monday, December 8 at 8pm and 9pm, respectively.
Following the holiday episode, Chasing Life will return in January for the second half of season 1.
