It was just over a month ago when The CW moved Cult to Fridays. And now the news isn’t getting any better now that the network has pulled the remaining episodes from its schedule. While an official announcement about the show’s future hasn’t been made, this move means it’s effectively cancelled.
In a dig at the powers-that-be who set the network schedule, star Matt Davis tweeted out, “Good news, Cult fans! Cult has been renewed for the next ten seasons due to its brilliant marketing campaign! Good job everyone.” He followed that up with, “All joking aside, thank you to all who watched. It was a wonderful learning experience, and exciting misadventure. On to bigger and better!”
Creator Rockne O’Bannon also posted his reaction to the news: “Sadly true. CW Execs once called the last 5 episodes ‘outstanding.’ I guess too outstanding. You are great, SMART fans. Thx to u all!”
And guest star Jeffrey Pierce expressed his disappointed as well: “Can’t believe they’re pulling CULT now. We were just about to jump into the deep end of the pool.”
A fan petition has started online, demanding that The CW provide fans with the remaining six episode, if not on the air, then at least online. It had less than 100 signatures as of mid-afternoon on Wednesday. Unless it picks up, it’s doubtful that the petition will work because the series may have been doomed from the start. When it first premiered (with only 860,000 viewers tuning in), Cult was paired with Hart of Dixie, a dramedy that appeals to a very different audience. And after its move to Fridays, it aired opposite NBC’s Grimm, which might not have helped either.
The CW is filling the now-vacant 9pm timeslot on Fridays with repeats of The Carrie Diaries and Oh Sit.
