Every year when the President gives the State of the Union Address, there’s always one person in the presidential line of succession who does not attend so that if tragedy strikes, he or she can step in and become President. That’s the premise behind the new ABC drama Designated Survivor, which sees 24 alum Kiefer Sutherland starring as a low-level cabinet member named Tom Kirkman who becomes President after an attack on the US Capitol during the State of the Union.
According to ABC, “Kirkman will struggle to keep the country and his own family from falling apart, while navigating the highly volatile political arena and while leading the search for who is responsible for the attack.”
