Previously on Desperate Housewives: The season 4 finale flashed forward five years in the lives of the residents of Wisteria Lane. Susan was with a new man, Gabby had let herself go, Lynette’s kids were still out of control, Bree and Andrew repaired their relationship and work together, and Edie made plans to return to Wisteria Lane.
Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry knew he was taking a risk when he decided to flash forward at the end of season 4, but it was one he was willing to take and his producers stand behind him. “The jump will seem odd in the first episode, but at the end of the episode, people will be on board with it,” exec producer Sabrina Daily said at this year’s TCAs. “It will not be as jarring a change as people think it might be.” Let’s hope so. The show will start to follow a format similar to Lost, flashing back five years to show viewers how each character ended up where they are now.
The show will have a lot of questions to answer when it returns next month. At the top of the list is Susan’s new man – who he is, how they ended up together, and what his story is. Fans also want to know what became of Edie, who did not appear in the season 4 finale. All Marc Cherry would say about Nicolette Sheridan’s involvement in the show is “I only address one rumor at a time. We’ll have to wait until next season and see.” Cast member Dana Delaney has revealed that Sheridan is returning but we’ll have to wait and see her return and how long she’ll be staying on Wisteria Lane when she does.
With the five year jump comes acting replacements for Lynette’s evil children, Porter and Preston, now played by Charles and Max Carver. They’ll continue to make her life miserable in season 5 and no one will be able sympathize with the pains of motherhood more than Gabriella. Bree will continue her healthy and working relationship with Andrew, which means that Shawn Pyfrom will be appearing regularly next season. For those looking for Susan and Mike to hash things out, they will, in the season premiere. In just a few short weeks, the answers will start pouring in for fans and it looks like Wisteria Lane could become the most interesting it’s ever been!
