The tension between Lynette and stepdaughter Kayla Scavo heats up in the last three episodes of the fourth season of Desperate Housewives as the scheming problem child cranks up the deviousness to make more trouble for her stepmother. But what happens after the two-hour season finale on May 18? Kayla’s portrayer, Rachel Fox, knows, but she’s not telling.
“I’m good at keeping a secret,” Fox said. “Besides, the fun is for the audience to guess and wonder and try to figure out what’s going to happen. And with a show like Desperate Housewives, well, you never know.”
Word on the street is that show creator Marc Cherry plans to fast-forward the drama five years for the fifth season. Now, speculations have surfaced regarding a possible recast for the character of Kayla, leaving Fox’s fate on the series uncertain. But while the 11-year-old actress is keeping tight-lipped about it, she does hint on what’s in store for the last three episodes of the season.
“They’re giving me some of the best scenes I’ve ever had, and they’re so much fun to play,” Fox said. “I even get slapped in one scene by Felicity Huffman [Lynette], and she was so sweet about working with me on that, making sure everything went just right. That’s the best thing about working with Felicity Huffman and everyone at Desperate Housewives: You learn something new every day.”
Fox made her first appearance in the third season premiere of Desperate Housewives. Cherry had planned to use Fox in only six episodes that season but she ended up in 13 episodes, winning a series regular status for the fourth season.
Avid viewers of Desperate Housewives already know that Kayla’s angelic face hides a devilish brain. According to Fox, her portrayal has been inspired from Patty McCormack’s ultimate problem child, Rhoda, in the stage and screen versions of The Bad Seed.
“They showed me the movie before we started work,” Fox said. “I can see what they mean, because they can both smile and pretend to be sweet, when they’re not. But I think Kayla is very different. Her approach is different. I love doing both comedy and drama, and the fun part about Desperate Housewives is you get play the two sides.”
