It’s no secret that Seattle Grace will soon be saying goodbye to two of its original characters, but soon, ABC viewers will have to face the fact that Wisteria Lane will lose one of its residents too.  According to TV Guide, Nicollette Sheridan will be leaving Desperate Housewives after five seasons of playing mischievous Edie Britt.

“[Nicollette] had a great time on the show and is looking forward to her next project,” a rep for Sheridan said in a statement.

The 45-year-old actress has been rumored to exit Desperate Housewives since last April but has always laughed off the controversy, insisting that her character is getting prepared for some explosive storylines.  Unlike previous seasons, which saw Edie with less screen time compared to other housewives of Wisteria Lane, this season’s central mystery revolves around Edie’s mysterious new husband, Dave Williams (Neal McDonough) and his seemingly disturbing intentions for moving to Edie’s idyllic neighborhood.

Edie has already left Desperate Housewives once at the end of the fourth season when she moved to Boston, essentially disappearing from Wisteria Lane during the five-year time jump that occurred between Seasons 4 and 5 before returning at the start of this season.  As of this moment, there is no word yet on how Edie will leave the canvas.

Sheridan, who had her career breakthrough as Paige Matheson on the CBS night soap Knots Landing, was initially offered a minor role on Desperate Housewives.  But since her character became popular, she was elevated to become the fifth lead character on the show, following Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross, and Felicity Huffman.

Fans can catch Nicollette Sheridan’s remaining episodes on Desperate Housewives, airing every Sunday at 9pm on ABC.
