As previously reported, Gilmore Girls alum Matt Czuchry has landed a guest-starring stint on the NBC football drama, Friday Night Lights.  Czuchry is set to play Chris Kennedy, a conservative Christian radio show host who becomes friends with the spiritually reborn Lyla Garrity (Minka Kelly).  His storyline will tie into Lyla’s on-and-off romance with football player Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch).

“[He is] very strong in his beliefs, but, at the same time, he is very open,” Czuchry said of his character in an interview with knoxnews.com.

Matt Czuchry, who claims that he has been a “huge fan of [Friday Night Lights] since day one,” auditioned for the part some time after Gilmore Girls ended in the spring.

“Auditioning is never easy,” he said with a laugh. “It was a challenge because I was working on a play at the same time.  The audition was on a Friday.  I got home Thursday night and went through the material.  I stayed up until, like 2 in the morning.  I was excited about it, though.  I had put it out there to the universe that to do that show was at the top of my list.”

While Czuchry is happy to be part of Friday Night Lights, he is well aware of the show’s less-than-stellar performance in the ratings game.  Nevertheless, Czuchry told knoxnews.com that the show’s relatively low viewership and several brushes with cancellation have not dampened the cast and crew’s spirits.

“It really, really is a special environment,” Matt Czuchry said.  “It’s a completely different show than Gilmore [Girls] but, then, it’s a completely different show from any other TV show I have ever worked on.”

For now, Czuchry is slated to appear in four episodes of Friday Night Lights, but the 30-year-old actor said that additional appearances are possible.  His first air date is on Friday, January 18.
