Glee season 3 is allegedly going to cut down on guest stars and increase storylines for some of the minor characters. But there are still plenty of new faces coming. In addition to several new students, Glee has also cast parents for student Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.) and guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays).
According to TVGuide, Emma’s parents will be played by Don Most (Ralph Malph from Happy Days) and Valerie Mahaffey (Orson’s first wife on Desperate Housewives most recently scene as Hope’s other grandma on FOX’s Raising Hope). Perhaps we’ll get to see the origins of Emma’s O.C.D. or, failing that, an awkward meeting between Will and Emma’s dad.
Meanwhile, EW first reported that Mike Chang’s parents will be played by Tamlyn Tomita and Keong Sim. Tomita has had numerous TV roles, including the coroner on Law and Order: Los Angeles, President Palmer’s press secretary on the second season of 24 and Hiro’s mom on Heroes.
With parents, Emma and Mike Chang should definitely get more screentime than last season, where they were relegated to very minor roles (even though Emma got married). However, it will still be interesting to see if/when Glee decides to cast Rachel’s two dads, or if they’ll ever bring back Will’s parents, especially Victor Garber. After just one episode at the start of season 1, I’m still bitter over the fact that Garber, who has a background in musical theater, never got the chance to sing.
Glee season 3 premieres Tuesday, September 20 at 8pm on FOX.
