More than a year ago, maybe while we were watching Adam Lambert almost sweep American Idol, there was this little trailer that always played a choired-up version of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'”. It was for this little show called Glee.
Well, you know what happened since then.
Twenty-one episodes, five CDs, millions of downloads, several awards and a boatload of gleeks later, we’ve made it: the Glee season finale. And yes, I know you’re probably feeling sad at the moment. We won’t have Glee for three months! you’d probably squeal. Well, it’s better than having to wait for four months like we did early this year. And at least we’re guaranteed of two more seasons from New Directions.
Tonight’s finale is a pretty eventful one in itself. Finally, regionals! The very thing New Directions has been gunning for, finally within their reach. They’ve always had their eyes on that from the very beginning — when this little glee club that could was formed, from a mixed bag of misfits and popular kids, and decided to go past personal troubles (and the occasional Sue Sylvester) to win sectionals and compete at regionals.
On the other side: Vocal Adrenaline, that ruthless (and ruthlessly good) show choir where metal underwear and constant vomiting is the norm. They also have a certain Jesse St. James, who recently went into a relationship with New Direction’s Rachel Berry, who happens to be the long-lost daughter of his coach Shelby Corcoran… it sure gets complicated, right?
Well, all that moves to the back burner tonight. It’s competition time. And after getting past that mix of personal trouble — and some psychological warfare in last week’s episode — it’s time to get back on stage and perform. In a nice nod to the show’s beginnings, New Directions will perform songs from Journey, including a couple of tracks we saw in the pilot: “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin'” (the one with a young Finn, remember?) and a reworked version of “Don’t Stop Believin'”. Of course, you can buy those tracks now, as the Glee, The Music: Journey to Regionals EP hits stores today, too.
Sure, those songs may be any good, but will New Directions get past the idea of Sue Sylvester being one of the judges? Scream it with me: conflict of interest! Or, diabolical plan to take down New Directions and kick Will’s ass!
And that’s not the only thing we should look out for. One, Emma returns — damn you, Smurfs — and our fingers are crossed things she patches up matters between her and Will. I mean, he’s a slut, but he’s a lovable slut, right?
Also, Quinn’s life will supposedly change forever. Oh, let’s not pretend we don’t know what will happen.
With the finale in sight, I can’t help but wonder about a few things. Think about this: it’s pretty much a given that New Directions will win, but will Sue actually pull off a surprise and give victory to someone else? That will affect what happens in the second season. Is nationals next, or will we have to wait a little more? That’s just the tip of the iceberg, gleeks. We better discuss it over here.
