Ryan Murphy has made it official: Glee will end after season 6.
The showrunner for the FOX musical dramedy made the announcement while speaking at a Paley Center event Wednesday night. Incidentally, he was there for FX, the network that airs his other show, American Horror Story, which recently premiered its latest season, Coven, to record ratings for the series.

Murphy has known for a long time how the show would end, according to TVLine, but he’s had to rework that plan in light of Cory Monteith’s passing. “The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story,” he said. “I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was — he was in it. I knew what the last line was — she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens, you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now.”
But he did reveal he has something else in mind now for how the series should bow out. “I have a good idea,” Murphy went on to say. “I’m going to tell the studio and the network [in a week] how after Cory’s unfortunate passing we can end the show that I think is very satisfactory — and kind of in [Finn’s] honor, which I love.”
Fans have known since August that season 6 would more than likely mark the end of Glee. At the time, FOX chairman Kevin Reilly told reporters at the TCA Summer Press Tour, “I would not anticipate it goes beyond two more seasons. Never say never, but there’s two very clear [story] arcs to get to that end and conclude. If we discover a new crop of kids and there’s some breakout we like … [but] right now, we’re thinking two seasons.”

Those remarks followed the announcement from this past spring that Glee was being renewed for two more seasons, which now fits right in line with Ryan Murphy’s comments on when the show will end.
Glee recently aired its Cory Monteith tribute episode, in which the characters (and of course the cast members themselves) paid tribute to and honored Finn and the actor who played him. The cast performed six songs during the episode, fittingly titled “The Quarterback,” including “Seasons of Love,” “I”ll Stand by You” and “If I Die Young,” with Rachel making an appearance near the end to perform “To Make You Feel My Love.”
