Heroes was a major critical and ratings success in its debut season. This success extended to the Emmys when it scored nominations in eight categories, including the prestigious Best Drama category. The nominations are all fine and good, but what are the chances that Heroes walks away from Sunday’s award show with actual Emmy statues. Well, we’re going to take a look at where exactly Heroes best chances for Emmy gold are. I’m in the camp that believes Heroes stole Lost’s spot in the Best Drama category, but I’m going to do my best to remove personal feelings from the analysis.

Okay, so let’s be honest here. There are some categories in which I haven’t the slightest idea whether or not Heroes has a good chance at winning. But I can guess. These categories are Art Direction (Heroes definitely looked good), Editing (if I didn’t notice the editing, that means it was good, right?), Sound Mixing (I only recently got surround sound), Stunts (the flying was pretty good), and Special Effects (also pretty good). Your guess is as good as mine in these categories, so let’s move on to the biggies.
Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series – David Semel for “Genesis”
This is a stacked category, with seven nominees in all, the other six being from The Sopranos, Lost, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Battlestar Galactica, Boston Legal, and Friday Night Lights. Heroes chances don’t look good. I have to give The Sopranos the edge here because the Academy has always been fond of the HBO series and will want to give it a nice send-off. Even if The Sopranos doesn’t win, next in line has to be Lost or maybe even Friday Night Lights.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series – Masi Oka as Hiro
Masi Oka will be up against Michael Imperioli from The Sopranos, Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emerson from Lost, T.R. Knight from Grey’s Anatomy and William Shatner from Boston Legal. Masi was a surprise addition to this list in the first place and there’s no chance he wins the Emmy. This is one of those times where the nomination itself is recognition enough.
Outstanding Drama Series
The Sopranos, Boston Legal, House, Grey’s Anatomy and Heroes. Again, Heroes has the odds stacked against it. By all accounts, The Sopranos is the clear favorite to win this award, which would act as sort of a lifetime achievement award for a show that has been so critically acclaimed throughout its run. If it isn’t The Sopranos, nothing else jumps out as the number two option. Maybe Boston Legal. If Heroes wins, it will be a major, major upset.
