Heroes has turned to a bit of cinema – or is that web – verite in introducing a chunk of its season 2 mythology. The creators have set up a very authentic looking website devoted to the history of the character Takezo Kensei (David Anders), who Hiro (Masi Oka) came face to face with after his emergency blink out during the Heroes season 1 finale landed him smack dab in the middle of feudal Japan.
The site, which is sponsored by Hiro’s father Kaito Nakamura (George Takei, who appears on the site’s videos), is a collection of information related to the history of Kensei, amongst others. There is some definitive information that reveals, through the lens of mythology, that Kensei very likely did have powers. What those powers are, however, remains a mystery.
TV Guide is reporting that the website, yamagatofellowship.org, will feature a documentary featuring actors playing academics, studying the implications of several paintings that depict Kensei’s heroics.
Heroes creator Tim Kring told TV Guide “…we use academic professors, only ours are actors, and they share their historical insight against a background of paintings, tapestries and graphics. It’s a chance to dig a little deeper into the new season. Part of the social currency our fans trade on is their knowledge of the show, and this is a fun, cool way to know a lot more than the next guy.”
One bit of controversy over Kensei is the fact that the actor playing him is a Caucasian with blond hair and blue eyes. The question of whether or not Anders would be wearing makeup to fill the role of the Japanese character seems to be answered in TV Guide’s article. “I promise you’ll get the scoop behind this in the season premiere, we’re going to reveal why — contrary to legend — Kensei is not Japanese.” Kring said.
Heroes returns September 24th.
