After three years as the leading lady on ABC’s hit Lost, Evangeline Lilly could probably have her pick of Hollywood blockbusters. Instead, the artistically inclined Lilly has chosen a small independent thriller to launch her big screen career, and doesn’t hesitate to speak her mind when it comes to her aversion to “blockbusters.”
“I have struggled to find the right combination of factors, I was daunted by the notion that my only option might be to go do some big Hollywood film because that doesn’t interest me whatsoever. I don’t see any value in fame and I don’t see any value in big blockbuster hit films. I have been looking for a quiet beautiful little project for three years.” Lilly told CanWest news reporter Brendan Kelly.
The ‘quiet’ little project Lilly wound up selecting ended up having a rather disquieting plot. In the film “Afterwards” Lilly plays the ex-wife of a high powered attorney played by French actor Romain Duris. Duris’ character has become estranged from his ex wife and their daughter until they meet a doctor played by John Malkovich who claims to be able to predict when someone will die.
Lilly is currently filming the feature in Canada while Lost continues its break. Filming of “Afterwards” began in New Mexico after preparations were completed in New York. The film is mostly a French production, which is perfectly okay with the fluent French-speaking Lilly.
“Afterwards” is adapted from a French novel of the same name. The film does not presently list a release date on IMDB, but with Lilly and Malkovich involved it should not have any trouble finding distribution.
Lost fans will have to wait until early 2008 to see Evangeline Lilly’s Kate again, although production is scheduled to resume on the island mystery early next month, and end shortly after Lost’s fourth season debuts.
