Sure, LOST producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse say they planned it all along, but it now looks like LOST‘s latest to fall prey to the mysterious island may have had a hand in it himself. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, former LOST star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje discussed his character’s surprising death, and the equally surprising reasons behind it.
Adewale explains that his attraction to the part of Mr. Eko was pretty much blown out of the water shortly after the ink dried on his LOST contract. Initialy, Mr. Eko (he came up with the name, by the way) was to be strictly a quiet priest with big muscles, a contrast to Adewale’s type-cast drug-lord/bully OZ character. Once he was on board, however, LOST writer’s began to capitalize on his experience as the bad guy to form a melding of the two. While fan’s delight to the transformation from drug lord to priest, a LOST hallmark if there ever was one, it was a story Adewale would have rather not told.
In his post-LOST life, Adewale will be producing and directing a feature film based on his own life in England’s rough and tumble foster care system. He has not ruled out a guest appearance on LOST somewhere down the road.
