Rosie O’Donnell’s return to Nip/Tuck was anything but glamorous. For the large part of “Dawn Budge II,” the actress-comedienne had her mouth sewn shut and her face covered with ugly scrapes, cuts and bruises. She, or rather Dawn, also had to endure a terrible anal probe from a man pretending to be a doctor to satisfy his strange fetish.
Despite such unpleasantries, O’Donnell says she doesn’t mind playing the role.

“I kind of think of Dawn as Archie Bunker in a Prada suit, because she’s really only concerned about herself,” she said. “Also, there’s nothing, to me, that Dawn wouldn’t do. I have no qualms with this character. It’s pretty fascinating.”
O’Donnell first appeared on Nip/Tuck during the show’s fourth season, and even then it was already apparent that her character was somewhat unfortunate. While Dawn may have won the lottery, she also caught her daughter in bed with her husband and paid Dr. Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) hundreds of thousands of dollars to have miserable sex with her on a rug.
Rosie O’Donnell herself has had quite a run-in with misfortune this past year, what with her premature exit from The View and losing the chance to take over the Price is Right hosting duties, a job that eventually went to fellow comedian Drew Carey.
After all that she has been through, it is understandable why O’Donnell now prefers acting “to doing a talk show and talking to other people about how much fun they had doing this,” especially since she’s guest-appearing on Nip/Tuck, a show of which she is a big fan.
“This is a different thing. This is not about me, this is not ‘Rosie O’Donnell in …’ This, I’m a guest on an existing show that I think has tremendous artistic merit,” she said. “And the fact that [Nip/Tuck creator] Ryan [Murphy], the artist, feels that the color that I create for him in Dawn Budge is something he can paint with — that’s an amazing feeling. Very different from ‘live studio audience!’ and ‘me, me, me!’ And, every time you move, being on Entertainment Tonight.”
Nip/Tuck airs Tuesday nights at 10pm on FX.
