The One Tree Hill season 6 finale was seen by many fans as a fitting end to the series, but of course, it wasn’t. Last night’s episode had some of the same feel, wrapping up almost everyone’s story in a neat little bow.
If it weren’t for the sudden appearance of a hot British guy whose sole purpose is to try and put the final nail in the coffin of Brooke and Julian’s love, there wouldn’t be much that needs to keep going.
Clay and Quinn: Insanely Ever After
If you don’t know what a deus ex machine is, it’s a fancy word for Joe Turner’s mom having cancer, an overly convenient and simplistic plot device that allows everything to work out perfectly. On the bright side, Quinn’s cheerleading moves were hysterical.
The episode ended with them wading in the immensity while he prepared to fall insanely in love with her. That’s fine, but watching people fall in love isn’t particularly fun to watch. I’m hoping they emphasize the insane part and we learn that one or both of them is severely disturbed. One of them sees ghosts and the other dances like an epileptic at a disco party.
The Scott Family: No Caca del Toro
Everything worked out perfectly for Nathan and now Haley is off on her nationwide tour. As always, the Scott family reminded me of how awesome they are, throwing tomatoes at one another and actually putting a bar of soap in poor little Jamie’s mouth. We also got to see Chester, which is always a good thing.
From here, it’s hard to tell where else this family’s story could go. We already had the infidelity storyline, Nathan is back on the Bobcats, Haley is a touring musician, so it doesn’t seem like there’s any logical place for the show to go. Right now, I’m betting that Haley will be pregnant again before the end of the season.
Brooke and Julian: Did They Break Up?
Maybe I wasn’t watching as carefully as I thought, but did Brooke and Julian ever actually break up? Obviously Brooke has serious doubts due to the fact that Julian is a constant savior of women in need and Alex is his latest project, but she never actually, technically broke up with him.
But that’s a moot point, because hot blonde British guy walked in at the last minute, and that’s a recipe for disaster. Despite the fact that he’s a fashion designer, I’m going to assume he’s straight, otherwise there’s very little fun for Brooke to have. I only hope One Tree Hill avoids this painfully obvious romantic comedy route and surprises us. For instance, maybe hot new British guy really is gay or maybe he falls in love with Victoria.
Dan, Mouth and Skills: Goodbye?
Mouth and Skills have moved away to Los Angeles and Dan Scott has taken off to parts unknown yet again. It felt like a pretty solid send-off, but I have to imagine one or all of them will be back, somehow.
While I want Dan back, I hope Mouth has enough sense to stay away. We saw Millie sneaking out of rehab, so I really hope Mouth learned his lesson about trying to rescue junkie Clothes Over Bros models.
Luckily the wait won’t be long and One Tree Hill picks up in 2010 on January 18 followed by the series premiere of Life Unexpected.
