Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were a huge success when they hosted the Golden Globe Awards in 2013, so NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are sticking with their winning formula not just one more time, but for two additional years.
That’s right: the former Saturday Night Live cast members have deals in place to host the Golden Globes in both 2014 and 2015.
“Tina and Amy are two of the most talented comedic writer/performers in our business and they were a major reason the Golden Globes was the most entertaining awards show of last season,” Paul Telegdy, president of Alternative and Late Night Programming at NBC Entertainment, said in a statement. “We’re elated they wanted to host together again and that they committed for the next two years.”
HFPA president Theo Kingma added, “Their return ensures that the Golden Globes will once again be the biggest, best and most entertaining awards celebration of the year.” And Allen Shapiro, CEO of Dick Clark Productions, which produces the award show, also commented on the fantastic duo, saying, “Tina and Amy have a truly unique chemistry making them one of the most talented and captivating pairings of all time.”
Fey and Poehler took over hosting duties from Ricky Gervais, who received mixed reactions for his three-time stint. Some thought he was too controversial, and went a little overboard in his criticisms of celebrities.
According to Deadline, Gervais had an option in his original contract to return. Fey and Poehler, on the other hand, only signed on for one year, which makes this announcement even more exciting that they would decide to come on board now for an additional two years. Award shows are a perfect venue for these two comediennes because they have a vast amount of experience in improv, sketch comedy and live TV.
When the 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation stars hosted the first time around, ratings increased 17% from the previous year, drawing in 19.7 million viewers. And in the 18-49 demographic, the telecast was up 28%.
