Former Prison Break actor Lane Garrison has made headlines for only one thing in the last year: his legal issues. In November of 2007, Garrison was sentenced to 40 months in prison for vehicular manslaughter. The year before, he lost control of his car while taking some friends to buy alcohol. A 17 year old high school student was killed in the accident. It seemed, when Garrison was first sentenced, that he wouldn’t serve the full term but it seems that the California legal system is determined to make him spend every minute in prison. Today, it was announced that Garrison will be transferred to one of the toughest prisons in the state.
Garrison is being moved, for the fifth time, since he first began his stint in jail. Though he has spent most of his time in medium security prisons, those days are now behind him. He’ll be headed to California’s infamous Corcoran State Prison, where Charles Manson once sat behind bars. At Corcoran, Garrison is also enrolled in the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, where actor Robert Downey Jr. once completed his treatment.
Department spokesman Terry Thornton spoke to press but refused to give details, stating, “I cannot go into the reasons for the transfer, but the transfer is for the benefit of the inmate.” However, a source close to the situation divulged a little more information to E! News. “Generally speaking, if you are in a medium security facility with 600 inmates, you don’t get moved to a place that’s high security with 6,000 guys,” the source said. “Especially Corcoran—those are violent guys, mostly doing time for murder.”
Garrison will celebrate his 28th birthday this Friday. Since entering prison, he has led prayer groups and substance abuse support groups. He has also personally answered more than 1,200 letters of support.
