Prison Break‘s third season kicked off on Monday, September 17, with Michael Scofield right back where he started, only this time, it’s in a Panamanian prison that has been abandoned by authorities because of the dangers posed by inmates. Still, series star Wentworth Miller sees no problem with being back in prison.
“I think it adds something to the show,” Miller told TV Guide. “The first season had a claustrophobic feel, an intimacy — like a space you wanted to break out of. The second season, you never knew what you were going to get, which served the series.”
For those unfamiliar with FOX’s Prison Break, the drama revolves around Michael and his brother, Lincoln (Dominic Purcell), who was wrongfully incarcerated for the murder of the Vice President’s brother. Michael, who gets himself imprisoned in the same facility as Lincoln in the first season, has done everything in his power to free his brother and clear his name, all the while beginning to question where he can draw the line between good and evil.
“Michael has come a long way,” Wentworth Miller told TV Guide, adding that this season, his character has “lost a lot of his bravado, his arrogance. He’s more suspicious, less trusting. He’s twisting in the wind, but up to more tricks and likely to make more enemies.”
Miller also said that his character in this season’s Prison Break will continue to explore ethical boundaries as well as find ways to make up for the consequences of his past actions, including granting serial killer T-Bag’s (Robert Knepper) freedom.
“His journey is very much about how many times a good guy can cross the line before he can no longer call himself good,” he said. “He’s taken responsibility for letting people like T-Bag free, and being in prison again is helping him atone for his sins. He isn’t about self-preservation so much as self-sacrifice. He is self-destructive. As much as he planned all this, he’s never been very good at it. He did it to save his brother. It’s always about love and loyalty. At its core, this is a show about brothers.”
When asked if the brothers will ever find a pleasant resolution, Miller said that he is uncertain as Prison Break “is inherently a tragic story.”
“Every murder T-Bag committed in the second season is on Michael’s conscience. I think if both brothers get out of this alive, we’d call it a happy ending. But living happily ever after? I don’t know,” Wentworth Miller said. “I can see them opening a scuba shop on the beach or embracing and then parting ways. It’s a toss-up.”
Prison Break airs Monday nights at 8pm on FOX.
