If you think about it, the return of the ABC hit series Pushing Daisies is still a long way, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything going on behind the scenes of this creative show. The series creator Brian Fuller revealed to Entertainment Weekly that actor Stephen Root has been tasked to play a guest role in the series.
Fuller says that his character “has a shared history with both Ned’s (Lee Pace) dad and Chuck’s (Anna Friel) dad. He stirs up a lot of hullabaloo for everyone, particularly Aunts Lily and Vivian (Swoosie Kurtz and Ellen Greene).” He is set to appear in a four-episode story arc for the show’s upcoming season.
The 56-year-old actor’s most notable television roles include the eccentric billionaire Jimmy James in the NBC sitcom NewsRadio. His character, the owner of a news radio station in New York, is seen as a loving father figure among the station’s employees (played by Dave Foley, Maura Tierney and Phil Hartman, among others). He is also known for his desperate search for a wife; in most cases, he involves his subordinates.
Root also voiced the character of Bill Dauterive in Fox’s animated comedy King of the Hill. An Army sergeant who works as a barber in a military base, he used to be popular in high school but, because of some twist of fate, is now socially awkward, often demonstrating inappropriate behavior and terrible self-esteem.
Root also has a notable film career, appearing in releases such as Drillbit Taylor, O Brother, Where Are Thou? and No Country for Old Men. His most memorable film role, however, came in the 1999 comedy Office Space, where he played Milton Waddams, the soft-spoken employee who mumbles to himself a lot, and is often bullied by his management—at least until he snaps.
Pushing Daisies is set to return to television screens on October 1.
