What do you get when you mix OK Go — a band practically created by YouTube and viral-video sharing — with the Muppets — pop-culture icons that often garner stratospheric YouTube hits, despite their creation a full 50 years before the video site debuted?

Basically, you get a video that is practically guaranteed to go viral.

That was undoubtedly the thinking behind OK Go’s latest video release, “The Muppet Show Theme.” The footage features the members of OK Go involved in their trademark Internet-friendly musical tomfoolery. This time, however, the zany antics of the Muppets come along for the ride.

In a video filled with Muppet (and OK Go) goodness, it’s kind of hard to pick out the highlights. But here’s an attempt:

  • It’s nice to see those treadmills back. Such a cool video…
  • Marvin Suggs and the Muppaphone!
  • This is the longer version of the theme from The Muppet Show. They didn’t always sing about introducing the guest star.
  • Pepe the King Prawn unfortunately never appeared on the original Muppet Show. He only debuted as a regular Muppet character on Muppets Tonight. But he’s awesome, so that’s OK.
  • This video is better than cat videos. Unless the cats are super cute.
  • If you’ve ever seen behind-the-scenes footage of the Muppets, the members of OK Go being manipulated from below are particularly entertaining.
  • The multiple, surreal, repeated awakenings that end the video are interesting. But too many cucumbers…

The OK Go version of “The Muppet Show Theme” was recorded as part of the upcoming Muppets: The Green Album, released on August 23, 2011. The album features a host of contemporary artists covering songs made famous by the Muppets. Other tracks in the collection include “Rainbow Connection” covered by Weezer and Hayley Williams, “Mahna Mahna” by The Fray, “Wishing Song” as performed by The Airborne Toxic Event, “Bein’ Green” interpreted by Andrew Bird and “I Hope That Something Better Comes Along” sung by Matt Nathanson.

We can only hope that there will be more videos — featuring the Muppets, of course — deriving from this album.
