She’s been a musical guest before and has even popped up in a couple sketches, but now Lady Gaga is stepping fully into the Saturday Night Live spotlight when she hosts the NBC sketch comedy show for the very first time this weekend.
And who’s a good fit to be the musical guest for this episode? Why, none other than the “Born This Way” singer herself. She’s now the second person to pull double duty this season, following Miley Cyrus last month. Since the musicians usually perform two songs, I’m assuming Gaga’s going to sing “Applause.” As for the second performance, perhaps her new single “Do What U Want” featuring R. Kelly? If so, maybe the latter will show up in a sketch or two as well.
NBC has released a series of promos featuring Gaga and cast member Kenan Thompson, who tries to follow in the singer’s footsteps by wearing a meat watch. He even starts talking to a lamp wearing a blonde wig, mistaking it for Gaga (“I can’t tell the difference”).
There’s a bit at the end that makes the two of them throw up, but one of the highlights is when Kenan talks to Gaga about living for the “Applause,” as she sings about in her single of the same name. He points out that Tinker Bell also lives for the applause — and so of course the singer has to try and save Tink by clapping.
Lady Gaga’s SNL hosting stint comes the same week she released her new album, Artpop, which is expected to debut at #1. She’ll follow this up by performing at the American Music Awards on November 24 and starring in her own Thanksgiving Day special, Lady Gaga and the Muppets’ Holiday Spectacular, on November 28.
Are you looking forward to seeing Lady Gaga host and perform on SNL? Do you think she’ll poke fun at the media’s most recent attempts to pit her and Katy Perry against each other?
Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:35pm on NBC.
