The seventh season of Smallville promises to deliver more action and complications for the characters, especially with the arrival of two new ones, Kara (Laura Vandervoort)- aka Supergirl- and Grant Gabriel (Michael Cassidy), the Daily Planet’s new editor. To add to the excitement surrounding the series’ upcoming season, TV Guide has featured the show on its July 23rd issue cover and conducted an accompanying interview with co-creator Al Gough.
Gough, 39, was generous enough to discuss with the magazine some details about the new characters and what fans can expect from the old ones.
In talking about Kara/Supergirl, Gough told TV Guide that watching over her is “another step in Clark [Kent’s] journey” and that “he’s no longer in child mode.”
Kara, Clark Kent’s (Tom Welling) cousin from the planet Krypton, finds herself in Smallville after the dam burst in the sixth season finale awakes her. Prior to the incident, Kara was in her spaceship, which had been stuck in suspended animation for 18 years. Like Clark, she possesses extraordinary traits, including x-ray vision and superhuman strength and speed. She also has the ability to fly, a skill that Clark has yet to master.
“[Clark has] got to keep her out of trouble and make sure she doesn’t use the abilities for the wrong reason,” Gough said of the superhero’s responsibility over Kara.
As for Grant, the TV Guide article revealed that the new Daily planet editor’s interest in Lois Lane (Erica Durance) will go beyond professional boundaries.
It is clear that Kara and Grant’s arrival will have a significant impact on the dynamic of the show, but this does not mean that the new season will no longer explore the deepening relationship between the old characters.
For one, Gough said that although Clark and Lois are “still far from their romantic destiny,” fans will sense that they genuinely care about each other. He also revealed that Lois will become more of the “the Lois Lane we know from the Superman mythology,” as she pursues her journalistic career at the Daily Planet.
To contrast Lois budding relationship with Clark, Gough said that fans can expect to see the fearless reporter going head-to-head with the Luthors.
“This of course puts her in various stages of danger, much to Clark’s chagrin,” Gough explained. “After all, hell hath no fury like a bald billionaire scorned.”
