After taking a week off for the State of the Union, Smash is back and hopefully recovers somewhat from the premiere’s disastrous ratings. To give us a sneak peek of what to expect, NBC has released preview videos from “The Dramaturg.”

According to NBC, in episode 3, “Partnerships are tested as Eileen asks Tom and Julia to contend with an unwelcome new collaborator, while Jimmy and Kyle prepare to present their work for the first time. Derek attempts to get Ronnie back on his side. Ivy finds it hard to move on, but help from an old friend might take her one step closer to her dream.”
First up, Karen performs “Good for You,” a song that Jimmy wrote for Hit List, while she crowd-surfs on the stage.
Jennifer Hudson returns as Ronnie for the second episode of her arc. Here, she covers “Home” from the musical The Wiz — her voice never lets me down, the way she can hold out those notes so effortlessly. In the premiere, Derek was let go as director of The Wiz. Since he’s in this scene, can we assume he’s back in?
But it looks like there’s a change of plans, because Ronnie announces to Derek she’s quitting The Wiz. “I want the world to know that Veronica Moore is not their Broadway baby anymore,” she says. What does she want to do instead? Check out the below video to find out:
Smash airs Tuesdays at 10pm on NBC.
