Last night on So You Think You Can Dance, the top 18 dancers performed a variety of styles, from the Viennese waltz to krump, to varying reviews from the judges. The judges, Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Mia Michaels, are back tonight, and we’ll find out the result of last night’s vote. Who will make it through to next week? Which couples will land in the bottom three? Will the judges continue to reward technique over personality?

The hour opens with a group performance, a hip hop routine danced to “Elevator” by Flo Rida and choreographed by Shane Sparks. Next Cat Deeley, with her hair looking sleek and straight. We welcome oouuur…..joodges! Mia, Mary and Nigel.
It’s time to find out the fates of the first three couples. Katee Shean and Joshua Allen, who danced a Broadway routine last night and are the current crowd favorites, are safe. Kherington Payne and Twitch Boss are safe, and Chelsea Traille and Thayne Jasperson, who were at the bottom of my rankings last night, are in the bottom three, to nobody’s surprise.
After the break, it’s time to find out the fate of one of my favorite couples: Chelsie Hightower and Mark Kanemura. They are safe, yay! Kourtni Lind and Matt Dorame are safe. Cat fakes out Jessica King and William Wingfield for a second, but these two are safe as well.
That means that two of the remaining three couples will have to dance for their lives at the end of So You Think You Can Dance tonight. Susie Garcia and Marquis Cunningham, who danced a mild salsa last night, are in the bottom three. Now, it’s between Courtney Galiano and Gev Manoukian, and Comfort Fedoke and Chris Jarosz. After last night’s votes, the final couple in the bottom three are Comfort and Chris, which means that my current golden couple, Courtney and Gev, are safe.
Now, it’s time for a very special guest dancer, Flamenco dancer Timo Nunez, who auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance twice and made it to Vegas both times.
It is time for the dancers in danger to dance for their lives in their own styles. Chelsea T. dances first. While I’m not crazy about her choreography, she shows that she is clearly talented.
Thayne goes next. I love his jetes and pointed toes and he manages to throw in a back handspring step-out too, but he isn’t masculine enough for my taste.
Susie Garcia does her little salsa thing. Thankfully, she doesn’t wear her tiny little red bikini, but, overall, her solo is technique-lite.
Susie’s partner Marquis, on the other hand, has technique up the wazoo. He makes his contemporary self look beautiful and grace, yet still strong and manly.
Comfort comes out on stage and wows everyone with an amazing hip hop solo. I love the way she can control even the tiniest parts of her body, down to her pinky finger. I will be so mad if the judges send her home.
Chris, the final soloist, does a predictable sequence of leaps and pirouettes, which I find uninspiring. I mean, he definitely dances his little heart out, but I am just bored. Ha! Cat holds up a sign that reads “Chris is NOT a tree.” Funny, but I’m not so sure about that allegation.
Tonight’s live musical act is Flo Rida, who exhorts us all to “put [our], put [our] hands up, to the sky.” I take this moment to remember the little sketch from Nickolodeon’s Yo Gabba Gabba about the big purple monster who has a party in his tummy, so yummy-yummy! Anyone? Just me? OK…
The judges have finished deliberating and have returned to their seats. Uh oh, the sound technician is asleep on the job again. Nigel opens his statements with an extended analogy from the NBA finals about how they can still be brilliant dancers even if they are sent home. Chelsea is safe, Comfort is safe, but Susie Garcia must say good-bye.
And now for the three contemporary boys. The judges are unanimous about their decision. Nigel thinks that Thayne is all-around good, Marquis’ dancing was too trick-heavy and Chris has really stepped up with his personality. Nigel announces that Marquis is the one who is going home. Hmph, I guess this week, they are obviously not rewarding technique over personality, they are rewarding technique over … the potential for a personality? It doesn’t make sense. I would have gotten rid of Chris, personally.
