Fans complained and the Powers That Be (a.k.a. Nigel Lythgoe) not only heard, but listened. So You Think You Can Dance will be shaking up the timing of the eliminations process during the next live show.
For the Top 20 live elimination, the bottom six were announced at the beginning of the show. The judges then selected one male and one female to save. Then the remaining four danced for their lives and Carlos Garland and Brittany Cherry were cut from the competition.
The problem: Carlos and Brittany were then expected to dance with their partners even though they were already eliminated from the competition. That was not only an uncomfortable position for them to be in, but for the viewers as well.
The format further backfired when Carlos danced an amazing contemporary performance (#2 in BuddyTV’s rankings) with his partner Mariah. If the vote had taken place after the paired routines, he may well have been saved.
On Tuesday night, Lythgoe acknowledged the fan discontent over having the eliminations at the beginning of the show. He tweeted, “Ok I hear your disappointment in the format. We will certainly address that for next week. However, who gets cut will always be subjective!”
And, then on Thursday, he announced the new elimination format also on twitter, “We’re taking your advice by revealing America’s vote in the beginning and judging at the end. I hope it will inspire the bottom 4? Thank you.”
Going forward, the bottom six will be announced at the beginning of the show. The first two dancers will be saved and the remaining four will “Dance for Their Lives.” Then, the Top 18 pairs will dance their partnered routines with the show concluding with the elimination.
