Is it me or did it seem like everyone was trying way too hard in their videos on last night’s Top 20 episode of So You Think You Can Dance? The problem with the show is that often times, personality counts just as much, or even more, than the dancer’s ability or routine. Just ask Danny Tidwell. If technique and talent were the only things that were counted last season, he would’ve been the last dancer standing. I can’t imagine the pressure on a So You Think You Can Dance contestant. Last night, they not only had to work with a new partner, but perhaps a genre out of their comfort zone, and on top of all of that, they had to be ON. They had to be likable. They had to win people over, one 30 second video clip at a time.
I pretty much agreed with everything the judges said last night, good and bad. The only thing that got my blood boiling was Nigel’s critique of Matt Dorame. He performed a jazz routine with Kourtni Lind and Nigel felt that neither got down and dirty enough. I understood what he meant when he said that Matt danced very upright but when he said that he danced like someone with a pole up “where the sun don’t shine”, it got a little harsh. So You Think You Can Dance has always been a show about celebrating one’s passion for dance and there just seems to be no reason to knock an artist down like that.
You’ll have to excuse me while I write this because I’m also eating my words at the same time. I ranked Joshua Allen and Katee Sheen way low in my power rankings coming into this week. Last night, they delivered one of my favorite routines of all time. Usually, the routines that stick with me beyond each respective season come at the halfway point or later. Josh and Katee came out with a hip hop routine that just blew me away and I couldn’t be happier that Tabitha and Napoleon D’Umo have joined the list of choreographers this season.
Tonight, I expect Kourtni and Matt, Comfort and Chris, and Jessica and Will to be in the bottom tonight. Mary said that Jessica and Will were the couple to beat but I think she had a sip of Paula Abdul‘s funny water. They were good but I think Jessica’s missteps might be enough to make her dance for her life tonight.
