Comedy Central’s long-running animated series, South Park, is among the shows vying for a Primetime Emmy Award this year. The episode, “Make Love, Not Warcraft,” is nominated for Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour). The cartoon is up against such shows as The Simpsons, Robot Chicken, Spongebob SquarePants and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The nominated South Park episode was aired last year. According to online tech magazine, The Inquirer, the episode was praised by the gaming community for its realistic depiction of the typical World of Warcraft (WoW) game enthusiast. Positive reception of the WoW parody episode also led to the creation of a new in-game item inspired by one of the unique objects presented in the animated series.
There were, however, a few inaccuracies in the episode. For one, the original game dictates that a Mage is incapable of wearing a plate armor, yet the episode featured the particular WoW character in a plate armor.
Blizzard Entertaiment, the company behind the award-winning game, worked with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone on the Emmy nominated episode, which had Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny going up against an obsessed and mad gamer. The episode served as the opening for the series’ 10th season, drawing in around 3.4 million viewers.
“We were excited to hear that the creators of South Park were interested in featuring World of Warcraft in the opening of their new season, and we really enjoyed collaborating with them to make this happen,” Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, said last October.
The recent Emmy nod is the seventh for South Park, which will air the second half of its 11th season on October 3. So far, the animated series has only won the coveted award once, for the 2005 episode entitled, “Best Friends Forever.”
Other recognitions the show has received include a 2006 Peabody Award, a 1998 Annie Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Animated Primetime or Late Night Television Program and a 1998 GLAAD Award nomination for Outstanding TV- Individual Episode for “Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride.”
