Supernatural is about to be invaded by two full time female counterparts to Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). So far no casting information has been leaked but it looks like the characters will be regular recurring characters, one a hunter and one a mercenary, both make the brothers Winchester look like amateurs.
The news was broken by TVGuide’s Michael Ausiello, who is the breaker of many scoops, who said of the duo “One’s a mercenary, the other’s a Hunter – a Hunter so ruthless that I hear she’s going to make Sam and Dean look like the Hardy Boys.”
The news has caused a bit of a debate amongst the Supernatural fan set. The show, which sat on the bubble waiting for a third season confirmation, was in a bit of distress before being confirmed for a third go-around, and as we saw with Veronica Mars that usually prompts someone somewhere to say “How about we change the formula?” And, we all know how that worked out for Veronica.
When Mars was brought back for a third season it carried massive formula changes, first the split into three arcs instead of one, then the split into two arcs with single shots at the end. Despite upholding its ratings, and even besting its second season, Mars failed to accomplish what was needed for a renewal; an improvement.
Could Supernatural be facing the same ultimatum now? Raise your ratings or this is your last season? Could the inclusion of gasp love interests be a ploy for a hormonally induced ratings draw?
Supernatural’s occasionally fickle audience mostly complained about the false starts attributed to the serialized portion of its plot, a complaint that was silenced with the shows finale. In all likely hood, the inclusion of new characters will not stop the series from continuing down this road, but could it bring unnecessary distractions? Time will tell.
