In a previous article, we reported on a Cult Times interview with Jared Padalecki where he had a few very interesting things to say about his character on Supernatural. The most interesting of all was the statement, “We find out this season what Sam’s relationship was like with his dad beyond what we know, and if his dad really was his dad and if Dean really was his brother.”
Needless to say, the possibility of Sam not being a full-blooded Winchester almost caused the heads of many fans to explode. If it did turn out that Sam wasn’t really related to Dean, would it be a brilliant twist or would it cause the backlash of the century?
If Supernatural creator Eric Kripke actually had the guts to strip Sam of the Winchester family name, I would certainly have to give him some credit for sheer audacity. I may not like the storyline, and it may not be a good move for the show in the long run, but there’s no denying that it would be risky and somewhat interesting. I think there’s a very touching story to be found in the notion of these two guys, who have always stuck by each other out of brotherly love, being forced to reexamine their relationship. Just imagine what an emotional moment it would be when they decided to stick together despite not having any family ties. It would be a three-hankie episode for sure.
What if it turns out that Sam is only half a Winchester? There are some people out there who think that Sam and Dean’s mother may have had an affair with the Yellow-Eyed Demon. Giving Sam a half demon side would certainly explain why he never related to his father, and it would also illuminate Sam’s slow turn to the dark side. This scenario would leave Sam and Dean (Jensen Ackles) as brothers, thus not upsetting the fanbase or the structure of the show too much. It seems like a strong possibility to me.
Of course, another option is that Padalecki misspoke or was misquoted, or that because of the writers’ strike this plot thread will be derailed. I haven’t heard of this possibility in any other interview, so who knows if it’ll actually happen? Besides, just because the show plans to explore more of Sam’s childhood doesn’t mean it’ll lead to this sort of reveal. Anything could happen.
The more I think about it, the more I’m against the idea of Sam being completely stripped of his Winchester heritage. However, the idea of him being the son of the Yellow-Eyed Demon is extremely interesting to me. Would Eric Kripke risk such a big shift in the Supernatural mythology? Only time will tell.
