Making a deal with a demon never seems to end well, but that doesn’t stop the characters on Supernatural from forging shady pacts with otherworldly monsters. We’ve already seen John and Dean sacrifice their souls to save their loved ones, and in last week’s installment, “Time is On My Side,” we learned that Bela (Lauren Cohan) tossed away her soul in order to have her parents murdered. Much to the delight of Supernatural fans the world over, things didn’t end very well for Bela either.
There are plenty of demon deals to go around, but as we move toward the season finale Dean’s is obviously at the forefront. What can the Winchester boys do now that they know Lilith holds Dean’s contract?
Things are not looking good for Dean Winchester. The brothers know who has his contract, which is a step in the right direction, but they have no idea how to find Lilith. Since Bela sent the Colt halfway around the world, they also have no way to kill her if they do find her. Even if the Winchesters manage to get the demon leader’s attention, what will they do next? Kindly ask her to tear up Dean’s contract?
I had hoped that by this point in the season we would have seen more of Lilith, but aside from her appearance in “Jus in Bello” she’s been pretty scarce. Maybe if we had a full season we would have spent more time with her, but that wasn’t in the cards. We know that she wants Sam (Jared Padalecki) dead, and while I’m sure he’d willingly sacrifice himself to break Dean’s contract, we know Dean won’t allow it to happen. Without the Colt and without anything to trade for Dean’s soul, do the boys stand a chance?
Some have predicted that Sam will find a way to use his powers to save Dean (Jensen Ackles), but I find it highly unlikely. We haven’t seen any references to Sam’s abilities, or his slide to the dark side, in these recent episodes, which makes me believe that plot line may not resume until season 4. If Sam suddenly found a way to use his powers to save Dean in the season finale, it would seem a bit too much like a deus ex machina.
I’m going to make a wild guess and predict that Dean will die. We’ve been lead to believe that Lilith is an incredibly powerful demon, so it’d be a bit anticlimactic if the boys defeated her during their first meeting. I also don’t think Sam is going to sacrifice himself to save his brother, because we’ve already been there and done that with both John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Dean. I really think the elder Winchester is destined to go to Hell, and I think we’ll be left wondering how he’s going to come back. It’ll definitely make for one hell of a cliffhanger, and it’ll give us something to talk about until September.
I could be completely wrong, but if there’s one thing that I’ve learned from Supernatural, it’s that making a deal with a demon never leads to a happy ending.
