For the fourth time over the course of its run, Supernatural will have a new showrunner in charge of the Winchesters. Andrew Dabb, a writer for the show since season 4 and a producer since season 7, will take over as showrunner for season 12 alongside the show’s long-time director/producer Robert Singer.
The reason for the shake-up is simply that current showrunner Jeremy Carver is moving on to his new show. Frequency, a TV series based on the Dennis Quaid movie of the same name, was picked up by the CW for the 2016-2017 TV season. Carver, who wrote the pilot, will take over as showrunner for the new series, leaving Supernatural behind.

Supernatural has handed over the reigns two other times. After the first five seasons, original creator Eric Kripke left and writer Sera Gamble took over. After two seasons, Gamble left at the end of season 7, which is when Carver took control. And now after four seasons under the guidance of him, Dabb is the new man in charge of the Winchesters’ lives.
But don’t expect too much to change. After all, the transition makes sense since Dabb wrote the upcoming season 11 finale. In fact, he’s written more episodes of Supernatural than anyone, including Eric Kripke. So he might be the perfect guy to take over.
Though Supernatural is the only series Dabb has worked on, he’s now in very good company as all previous showrunners have their own new series. Carver is off to Frequency, Kripke’s NBC time travel drama Timeless has been picked up this year and Gamble is the creator of The Magicians, already renewed for season 2 on Syfy.
