In honor of Supernatural‘s 10th season, stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Executive Producer Jeremy Carver spoke with reporters at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour. They teased a little about what’s coming up next season, including Demon Dean, a dying Castiel and more.

Season 10 New Characters and Demon Dean
Carver: We will be seeing some new characters that I could tease a little bit. I mean, we’ll be seeing demons and angels and ghosts and werewolves. We’ll be seeing, of course, a side of Dean that we’ve never seen, which is Demon Dean, and we’ll be staying with Demon Dean for more than one episode, and I think we’ll probably be seeing a different type of Demon Dean than you might expect, which is something we’re all pretty excited about.
And in terms of other characters coming in, I can’t spoil too much, but while Sam is on the hunt for his brother, there is another rather mysterious character who is on the same hunt and causes all kinds of complications for the boys, and there are a host of others that I can’t really go into right now for fear of spoiling stuff.
On a Dying Castiel
Carver: Castiel is very much in the picture at the beginning of Season 10. We come back with him very much where we left off, with his grace is fading, and he is in danger of dying if he doesn’t figure out a way to deal with it.
… The issue was that he discovered that becoming an angel again with stolen grace was not going to be good enough. It was only going to keep him an angel for so long, but this time, if the grace ran out, he would actually die. So when we meet [Cas] , he is very much an angel but also very much a weakened angel.
On Soon End for Supernatural?
Padalecki: The short answer is no. If the show quality diminishes, which I have no doubt that it will not in [Carver’s] hands, but if the show ever reaches a spot where we get a phone call from Jeremy or whoever like, “You know what, guys, at this point in time we’ve kind of said what we feel needs to be said and can be said,” and I truly do deeply care about this show and about Sam Winchester. … I’ve got some kids now and a wife, and I love my personal life very, very much. And when it’s time to hang up the Sam Winchester hat, then I’ll welcome that chapter.
Carver: I hate to be all military on it, but there’s no quitting, anybody, and that starts with the stories, and that continues on to the execution. I really, yeah, I don’t see there’s so much story left to tell, which is sort of remarkable to think about, given that we’re in season 129 already. (Laughter.) No, we’re very excited to keep telling this story.
Ackles: I think we’re all on the same page. We still get excited about it. And I think that hasn’t tarnished in 10 years. And I remember getting the last script of Season 9, the season finale, and I got all giddy about it. I was excited to see what happens in Season 10. I think that as long as there’s that fulfillment, that enjoyment, that excitement, then yeah, we will keep going, and as long as people are hanging in there with us and are still entertained, then we love telling the stories of both of these guys.
When Supernatural Ends
Carver: I know that Eric Kripke always had an ending in mind he hasn’t yet shared with me. And I have an image and the like, but I always want to the keep room for, as our colleague Bob says, happy accident, as well. The show is continuing on and beyond, I think, any of our wildest dreams, so I don’t think we want to limit ourselves to any just because I might have the perfect image in my head, doesn’t mean one of these guys can’t come up with something okay. … I think myself, and all writers, we have images in our heads, but our minds are wide open.
