Earlier today BuddyTV interviewed three of Supernatural‘s best writers: Sera Gamble, Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund. While the full interviews span about one hour’s worth of great Supernatural discussions, those will be released over the next few weeks as we lead up to Supernatural‘s return on January 15.
But there was so much goodness to come out of these interviews that I have to share a few of the coolest bits right away. From the 66 seals and angels to Sam’s role and “Criss Angel is a Douchebag,” there was no Supernatural topic past, present or future that we missed. Here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come in the second half of season 4.

The breaking of the 66 seals will be a countdown clock for the rest of the season, much like Dean going to Hell was used last season. According to Sera Gamble, we’ll have an update about exactly how many seals have already been broken in one of the first few episodes back, and Lilith might be further ahead than you might think.
As previously reported, some of the first episodes back will also center on magicians and Dean and Sam’s high school days. The magic episode’s title, “Criss Angel is a Douchebag,” was obviously originally intended as a joke, and Gamble was as surprised as everyone else to learn that it actually got approval from the network.
However, the January 15 episode, written by Jeremy Carver, will be more of a pure horror episode, which he said was a bit of a challenge since it’s new terrain for him. And that won’t be the only writer experiment Supernatural is trying this season.
Near the end of the year, Ben Edlund, traditionally known for more comedic episodes like “Monster Movie” and “Ghostfacers,” will try writing a more emotional, dramatic and heartbreaking episode he described as “terrible,” but that’s terrible for the characters, not for the audience.
Gamble, whose episodes are more mythology and relationship-based, will be trying comedy in an upcoming episode that she promises to be even more meta and self-referential than previous outings like “Hollywood Babylon.” I don’t want to give away all the details yet, but it involves the Winchesters finding a book series called Supernatural.
There will also be a standalone mystery involving a haunted house with a very disturbing twist as well as more details about the hierarchy of angels and their operations.
Those are some of the juicier bits from our interviews, but over the next five weeks we’ll unveil our full interviews with Sera Gamble, Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund that involve more detailed discussions about all these topics, plus Sam’s storylines, the Impala and ghost bees. Yes, ghost bees.
