NBC’s The Office offers the latest in TV reruns called “newpeats,” the show’s version of reconstructed past segments stitched together to create a new façade. On Thursday, March 15, 2007, the network will integrate previously unaired material with a pair of episodes reruns. The episode entitled “Traveling Salesman” and “The Return,” which aired in January, will be re-edited to include deleted scenes, which have not been seen on television. This move is one strategy to boost the ratings during the content dearth known as repeat week, giving its replays a creative twist.
The Office, a sitcom created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, premiered last 2005 and is now on its third season. The comedy series has garnered numerous awards including an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2006 and a 2007 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. It chronicles the daily interactions of a distinct group of office employees which consists of Steve Carell who plays Michael Scott, John Krakinski who plays Jim Halpert, Jenna Fischer who plays Pam Beesly, Rainn Wilson who plays Dwight Schrute, and B.J. Novak who plays Ryan Howard to name a few.
Apart from the “newpeat” this coming week, the network has also scheduled a marathon for Thursday, March 29. The marathon will consist of five episodes, which will extend back to “Diversity Day” from season one, sandwiching a new episode entitled “Andy Baker, P.I.”
Aside from the network’s attempt to capture viewers who just might skip rerun week, the “newpeat” is also a treat for the avid fans that have shown their loyalty to the award-winning show. The executive producer of The Office Greg Daniels said, “It’s about giving something extra to our wonderful fans…their loyalty must be rewarded somehow, and we don’t have the budget for 10 million muffin baskets.”
