The 14th Screen Actors Guild Awards or SAG took place on Sunday, January 27, 2008. NBC’s The Office took home the SAG for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Cast in a Comedy Series.
The Office won thanks to the comedic talents of Steve Carell as Michael Scott, Jenna Fischer as Pam Beesly, Melora Hardin as Jan Levinson, John Krasinski as Jim Halpert, Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute, and B.J. Novak as Ryan Howard, among others.
Speaking of B.J. Novak, the Office cast member performed in front of a full house at Blackman Auditorium at Northeastern University in January 2008. He and his opening act, Dan Mintz, received a standing ovation from a crowd of over a thousand who attended the show. The event was a project of the Kappa Sigma and included a photo opportunity and autograph signing session afterward.
“It went very well,” Shawn Wolfgang, event coordinator, and a senior communication studies major remarked, “Everybody got laughs and it was nice to have a feel-good event like this.”
Prior to the start of the show, the Office star’s management informed the news staff that photographs should not be taken after the first five minutes of Novak’s performance. Towards the end of that five-minute period, Novak then told the audience that every picture taken of a person steals a part of that individual’s soul.
“So, you know celebrities like Britney Spears or Paris Hilton, they must not have – oh my God,” Novak said before pausing to stare thoughtfully at the audience, who had already broken out in stitches.
One particular audience member that night gave Novak the jitters. The actor/comedian admitted that having his father watch him perform for the very first time made him nervous.
“I’ve performed very little stand-up in Boston,” he said. “But I knew that my dad likes the one-line jokes. In the end, I could hear him laughing from the stage, which made me wonder why I never heard him before.”
Novak shouldn’t have worried, as his dad had nothing but rave reviews for his son.
“It was great to see him and it was a mind-blowing evening,” Bill Novak said of his son’s act. “It’s also great to be able to see people be enthusiastic at the show and really mean it.”
