The CW has a lot to be proud of when it comes to The Vampire Diaries, as the show’s ratings aren’t dying in the face of stiff competition. The show premiered with record numbers for the CW with 4.84 million viewers.
The second episode saw a slight dip once it was in competition with new episodes of NBC comedies, Survivor and Bones, but the second episode still earned 3.78 million viewers. The real test was the third episode. Would the numbers continue to drop, especially since the series premiere of Flash Forward on ABC was the time slot’s top show with more than 12 million viewers?
Absolutely not. The third episode of The Vampire Diaries actually improved slightly to 3.81 million viewers, turning it into the CW’s top performer again.
This comes just a few days after the network officially ordered nine additional scripts, which are now all but certain to air. The Vampire Diaries is a hit. Heck, while it was on Thursday night, Saturday Night Live even did a sketch in which a teenage vampire from the CW interviewed President Obama.
The success of The Vampire Diaries is even sweeter when compared to the two other new CW shows that aren’t doing so well. Melrose Place premiered with 2.27 million viewers, then slid to 1.81 and 1.45 over the next two weeks.
Even worse, The Beautiful Life started with a dismal 1.38 million and dropped to 1.1 million for its second episode.
It’s clear from the numbers that from the new shows this season, the CW’s survival rests entirely in the hands of The Vampire Diaries.
