Another season of The X-Files is coming to FOX, and that means more new episodes of what you love, including standalone monster-of-the-week cases and hours that delve into the show’s mythology. Chris Carter addressed the future of the series, its enduring appeal and more when he spoke with reporters.

Here are a few highlights:
- There are no plans beyond what they’re doing now, but “there’s a lot of life” and “lots of stories” still to tell.
- The biggest surprise about returning is “how great everyone looks.”
- Carter thinks the enduring appeal has to do with Mulder and Scully as characters and their relationship, as well as the way they tell their stories. It’s not always one thing all the time. They have comedy, thriller, monster-of-the-week episodes and more.
- They “respond to the political reality of our time right now,” and that finds its way into the show.
- “It’s a trick” transitioning between mythology and stand-alone episodes. The audience has always gone with them from one thing to the other, and they’re working harder to make those transitions seamless now. Whereas in the original series run, they’d do a mythology episode right into a comedy one.
- They tried to put the band back together in terms of the writers, but some people are working elsewhere now. They’ve never had a traditional writers room.
