Well, we did expect it. It was a virtual Twilight love-fest, with the film taking home most of the awards at the MTV Movie Awards that just wrapped up in Los Angeles.
Apart from winning Best Movie–which was decided by popular vote–it also took home four other awards. The film’s stars, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, won Best Female Performance and Breakthrough Male Performance, respectively. They also won the Best Kiss award, and almost proceeded to recreate it–until Kristen continued with her thank-you speech. Robert also won the Best Fight award, with Cam Gigandet, where he proceeded to thank his stunt double because “Cam would’ve beaten me easily.”
High School Musical 3: Senior Year also took home a couple of awards, with Zac Efron taking home the Best Male Performance nod, and Ashley Tisdale taking home the Breakthrough Female Performance nod. Other winners include Jim Carrey, Amy Poehler, the late Heath Ledger, and Miley Cyrus, for her song “The Climb”, which was used as the theme for Hannah Montana: The Movie.
Andy Samberg was at hand to provide the humorous bits in between, with the usual movie spoofs and short routines, but perhaps one of the more defining moments of the night was when Ben Stiller took home the MTV Generation Award and–in tribute, perhaps, to how the Oscars feted their major nominees earlier this year–has Zac Efron, Kiefer Sutherland and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog do the honors. Another possible highlight: the performance of Samberg’s songs from Saturday Night Live, including the infamous “Jizz In My Pants” and “D– In A Box”, from unlikely performers Leann Rimes, Chris Isaak and Forest Whitaker.
But perhaps the most significant highlight was when Sacha Baron Cohen presented the Best Male Performance award as Brüno, the character he’s taking on in a film next month. He descended from the top of the Gibson Amphitheatre as an angel, and decided to lower himself directly over Eminem, who performed earlier. Catch was, his bare buttocks were exposed, and they were smack in the rapper’s face. A minor scuffle ensued, when he had his bodyguards remove the comedian, before he walked out of his seat. While it may have looked scripted, some say it actually wasn’t…
Anyway, here goes the full list of winners:
