Fans everywhere are looking forward to a certain guest star that will show up on Glee next Tuesday. White Collar‘s Matt Bomer plays Cooper Anderson, Blaine’s older brother who happens to be actor. How did he snag this coveted role? What is his character like? And did he really kiss Jane Lynch? Read on to find out.
I think it’s always interesting to hear how a major guest star gets a role of these shows. Matt Bomer told EW that “Ryan [Murphy] just gave me a call and said, ‘Do you wanna come on and be part of an episode?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely. That would be fantastic.’ He called me the next day and pitched me the character and story arc and I literally had tears rolling down my face … [Murphy and co-creator Ian Brennan] just gave me such rich material to go off of. They let me go as cray cray as I wanted to.”
It sounds like Cooper may be a little out there? Blaine is a pretty normal guy, so what’s his brother like? “He’s somebody who has really strong convictions and opinions that are completely misguided and ill-founded, but his heart is in the right place,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. For a character who’s an actor, maybe he’s not as successful anymore if he’s not giving the best advice. Bomer continues, via TVLine, “He clearly hasn’t had an easy road of it as an actor. And over the course of that path, he sort of developed his own short cuts and tricks of the trade, which are all horribly misleading and misguided.”
If that’s the case, then how is Cooper well-known at all? He says that “His claim to fame is this free credit rating commercial; it’s about a 15-second spot. … He comes home and has this moment where he says, ‘God, it’s great to be back in Midwest.’ It’s the impetus of it all; he’s somebody who is desperate for validation, and the second he gets that, it kicks right in to the hubris. It ends up costing him, and he realizes at the end of the episode that if he doesn’t calm down, he’s going to lose his relationship with his brother.” I don’t know about you, but I sure hope we get to see that commercial.
The whole point of him being on is the fact that he’s playing Blaine’s brother. So after being asked with that brother-brother relationship is like, Bomer says, “…it’s complicated and complex. It’s a competitive relationship, a loving relationship. He feels a sense of responsibility as an older brother to look out for his younger brother. He also knows that his brother is incredibly talented, maybe more so than he is … he wants more for his brother and he knows he’s going to have a lot of success. He wants to help usher him in to that success in the best way he knows how.” I’m assuming any “cray cray,” as he put it earlier, that Cooper has coming into this episode will dissipate by the end and the two brothers will have some heart-to-heart moments.
What I’m looking forward to seeing is the reaction that Cooper receives from the students and teachers at McKinley High. Kurt’s ringtone is apparently Cooper’s commercial jingle. And Sue Sylvester turns out to be a huge fan of his. Speaking of Sue, it sounds like she takes things a little too far with him: “[Jane Lynch] knew that whatever greeting they had together would be completely inappropriate. So she said, ‘Matt, on this take, just kiss me on the lips.’ I said, ‘Great. You don’t have to ask me twice.’ It was nice.”
We’ve seen Sue be completely out of control. We’ve seen her be sympathetic. We’ve seen her try to find love. But this is interesting. It sounds like Cooper is going to be the one to initiate the kiss, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she tries to keep it going.
Finally, two new promos aired last night on FOX promoting the return of Glee. It features new footage and some flashbacks to the pilot.
