BIOGRAPHY

From Collins, Mississippi is Gerald Lee “Mac” McRaney, who was born on August 19, 1947. Of Scottish and Choctaw Indian ancestry, he used to work in the Louisiana oil fields prior to his dreams of becoming an actor. He is recognized as the last guest star to meet Marshal Matt Dillon in a gunfight on 1955’s Gunsmoke, in the episode titled “Hard Labor.”

McRaney’s early work included those in the 1969 low-budget slasher film Night of Bloody Horror, wherein he played the lead character, Wesley Stuart. He later went on to briefly appear on The Incredible Hulk and The Rockford Files. However, it was his work in Simon & Simon that gained him the most recognition. His other projects include Major Dad and Promised Land.

As for television, McRaney joined the cast of HBO’s Deadwood in its third and fourth seasons, where he played a famed gold prospector, George Hearst. He also became part of season 1 of CBS’ post apocalyptic series, Jericho, where he played the lead character’s father, Mayor Johnston Green. McRaney’s other television projects include the television films Not Our Son, Going for Broke and Ike: Countdown to D-Day. He also had a small stint on One Tree Hill. When his stint on Jericho ended in 2007, McRaney took on the role of Martin Boxer on episodes of Women’s Murder Club.

In talking about his career as an actor and how it affects the people around him, Gerald McRaney said, “It occurs to me that the only way you can have a positive effect on people’s lives through your work is by filling the loneliness, letting people know they’re not in this thing alone.”

In May of 1989, Gerald McRaney married actress Delta Brooke, his third wife. He is a supporter of veterans, and enjoys visiting the soldiers in Operation Desert Storm. He once personally delivered a message that blessed the troops on winning the war, and subsequently visited the marines in Toulon, France, on a trip sponsored by the United Service Organizations in 1993. While on the USS Ashland, he eagerly signed autographs for the marines and sailors. McRaney is a conservative Republican and a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). In 2010, he bagged a spot on the JJ Abrams series Undercovers on NBC.
