Biography

Richard Armitage was born August 22, 1971 in Leicester, England. He has an older brother named Chris and their father, John, is an engineer while their mother, Margaret, is a secretary. Armitage attended Brockington College then went to Pattison College in Coventry before taking up acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He briefly joined a circus in Budapest when he was 17 in order to secure his Equity card. He also worked at a warehouse as box packer and did front-of-house theater duties while still attending drama classes. Armitage began his acting career with performances in musical theater and is also adept at playing the flute, guitar and cello. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company for 18 months when he was 28. Armitage’s breakthrough role came in 2002 when he was cast as John Standing in Sparkhouse before landing the lead as John Thornton in North and South.

Guy of Gisborne, played by Richard Armitage on Robin Hood, is the right hand henchman of the Sheriff of Nottingham. He became lord of Locksley estate while Robin was away on the Third Crusade.
