Born in Dallas and raised in Richardson, Texas, Garrison moved out of his home due to a troubled relationship with his mother and moved into the family minister, Joe Simpson's home. Garrison lived with the Simpsons family, including pop stars Ashlee and Jessica, for one year. As a teen, he became known for stealing almost everything he could get his hands on, like car stereos or jugs of wine. His mother took him to the police then, and he was punished with hours of community service. In 2007, Garrison pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving charges for a crash that killed a 17-year-old passenger. In October 2007, Garrison was sentenced to 40 months in prison.
Despite his infamy, Lane Garrison managed to appear in a handful of productions. The graduate of J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas moved to Los Angeles when he was 18, just to pursue his love of acting. In 2004, he was given a role in the film Quality of Life, a drama directed by Benjamin Morgan. Garrison was also in an episode of Night Stalker, before his fame began with Prison Break. His role is that of a notorious pickpocket who was convicted of grand larceny and senteneced to five years at Fox River Penitentiary. While filming, Garrison managed to get a part in the film Shooter, playing the character Donnie Fenn. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Michael Pena and Danny Glover, and was released in 2007. Garrison also made an appearance in Crazy, portraying the character Billy Garland opposite Waylon Payne and Heroes star Ali Larter. The biographical drama was inspired by Nashville guitarist Hank Garland, and hit theaters in 2007.
