The 2013 Emmy Award nominations were announced Thursday morning, and as usual, it’s a crazy mix of established frontrunners and a few new faces. American Horror Story: Asylum led all programs with 17 nominations, followed closely by Game of Thrones with 16. 30 Rock was the top comedy with 13 nominations for its final season.

On the drama side, House of Cards made a big splash with nominations for Drama Series as well as Lead Actor and Actress. Game of Thrones also expanded its Emmy total with nominations for Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke (Khaleesi!) and Diana Rigg (Olenna Tyrell).

The biggest surprises are probably that, among the seven nominees for Lead Actress, none of them are Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife. However, the major networks did score nominations for Connie Britton in Nashville and Kerry Washington in Scandal.

For comedies, I’m shocked that the return of Arrested Development didn’t do so well. Despite Netflix scoring big with House of Cards, past Emmy champion Arrested Development only scored one major nomination for star Jason Bateman.

The news was much better for HBO, with nominations for Girls (including supporting actor Adam Driver), Enlightened and Veep (which added supporting stars Tony Hale and Anna Chlumsky to its total).

Here are the major nominees for the 2013 Emmy Awards.
